Are you sitting by your phone on a Wednesday wondering why your neighbor’s Social Security deposit landed and yours still hasn’t? I’ve been writing about payment schedules for years, and that question lands in my inbox every single month. The answer almost always comes down to one number: your birthday. The date you receive Social Security benefits each month depends entirely on your birth date and the type of benefit you receive. Once you understand that rule, the entire 2025 calendar clicks into place.
Most Social Security retirement and disability recipients are paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month based solely on birth date. SSI recipients receive payment on the 1st of the month. Pre-May 1997 recipients receive payment on the 3rd of the month. None of these dates are random. Source: SSA.gov Payment Calendar 2025

The SSA uses a three-group birth date system introduced after . Your payment date depends entirely on when in the month you were born, not where you live, not which bank you use. Here is what each group receives:
- Born 1st – 10th: Payment arrives on the second Wednesday of each month.
- Born 11th – 20th: Payment arrives on the third Wednesday of each month.
- Born 21st – 31st: Payment arrives on the fourth Wednesday of each month. This schedule applies to retirement, spousal, and SSDI benefits begun after May 1997.
Direct deposit processes overnight on those Wednesdays. Paper checks take three to five additional mailing days. I strongly recommend direct deposit if you are still receiving a paper check — the SSA itself recommends it for reliability.

Supplemental Security Income works differently. SSI pays on the first calendar day of each month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA sends payment the prior business day.
I track this carefully because my mother receives both SSI and SSDI. Knowing both schedules prevents a lot of anxious phone calls.
